Torsion bounds for elliptic curves and Drinfeld modules

چکیده
We derive asymptotically optimal upper bounds on the number of L-rational torsion points on a given elliptic curve or Drinfeld module defined over a finitely generated field K, as a function of the degree [L : K]. Our main tool is the adelic openness of the image of Galois representations attached to elliptic curves and Drinfeld modules, due to Serre and Pink-Rütsche, respectively. Our approach is to prove a general result for certain Galois modules, which applies simultaneously to elliptic curves and to Drinfeld modules. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 11G05, 11G09

Introduction to Drinfeld Modules
(1) Explicit class field theory for global function fields (just as torsion of Gm gives abelian extensions of Q, and torsion of CM elliptic curves gives abelian extension of imaginary quadratic fields). Here global function field means Fp(T ) or a finite extension. (2) Langlands conjectures for GLn over function fields (Drinfeld modular varieties play the role of Shimura varieties). (3) Modular...
متن کاملt-motives: Hodge structures, transcendence and other motivic aspects
Drinfeld in 1974, in his seminal paper [10], revolutionized the contribution to arithmetic of the area of global function fields. He introduced a function field analog of elliptic curves over number fields. These analogs are now called Drinfeld modules. For him and for many subsequent developments in the theory of automorphic forms over function fields, their main use was in the exploration of ...
متن کاملTorsion in Rank 1 Drinfeld Modules and the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture
It is conjectured that for fixed A, r ≥ 1, and d ≥ 1, there is a uniform bound on the size of the torsion submodule of a Drinfeld A-module of rank r over a degree d extension L of the fraction field K of A. We verify the conjecture for r = 1, and more generally for Drinfeld modules having potential good reduction at some prime above a specified prime of K. Moreover, we show that within an L-iso...
متن کاملDrinfeld Modules and Torsion in the Chow Groups of Certain Threefolds
Let E → B be an elliptic surface defined over the algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic greater than 5. Let W be a resolution of singularities of E ×B E. We show that the l-adic Abel–Jacobi map from the l-power-torsion in the second Chow group of W to H(W,Zl(2))⊗ Ql/Zl is an isomorphism for almost all primes l. A main tool in the proof is the assertion that certain CM-cycles in ...
متن کاملDrinfeld Modules with No Supersingular Primes
We give examples of Drinfeld modules φ of rank 2 and higher over Fq(T ) that have no primes of supersingular reduction. The idea is to construct φ so that the associated mod ` representations are incompatible with the existence of supersingular primes. We also answer a question of Elkies by proving that such obstructions cannot exist for elliptic curves over number fields. Elkies [El1] proved t...
